One of the many highlights of the 2026 Chevy Silverado EV is Chevy Safety Assist, a suite of advanced safety systems that warn you of potential danger so you can take action and avoid it. Let’s take a closer look at how some of its safety features protect you on the road.
Following Distance Indicator
In driver’s ed, the three second rule is constantly stressed, as it’s the minimum following distance you need to keep from another vehicle to drive safely. Under normal driving conditions, particularly in heavy traffic, it can be difficult to keep exactly to this rule, and you could be tailgating the vehicle ahead without realizing it.
This system uses a camera and radar to monitor any vehicle in front of you. The radar measures the distance from your front bumper to the rear bumper of the other vehicle. The distance is then compared to your current speed and then displayed on your screen, measured in seconds. This enables you to judge if you’re too close and need to slow down to increase your distance.
Front Pedestrian Braking
This feature also uses radar and a forward-facing camera like the system above. It’s automatically active when you drive at speeds between 5 mph and 50 mph, and it scans the road ahead for pedestrians or animals. If something is detected, an amber warning icon will appear on your screen to alert you. The system then calculates the distance to the object and your current speed to determine if a collision is possible.
If the system determines you’re moving too fast and may hit the pedestrian or animal ahead, a flashing red warning icon will appear on your screen. You’ll also hear warning beeps or feel seat pulses, depending on your previously selected warning choice. If you’re unable to hit the brakes in time, the system will apply hard braking to stop your Silverado and prevent a collision.
IntelliBeam
High beams make it much easier to see at night, particularly in poorly lit areas. Unfortunately, the beam’s direct angle can temporarily blind a driver ahead of you or headed in your direction. Reaching down to change the headlights to low beams means taking your eyes off the road, and this can be dangerous.
IntelliBeam prevents either of these issues. It uses a sensor at the top center of your windshield that can detect headlights or taillights. When lights are detected, the system automatically switches your headlights to low beams. Once the detected light source leaves the sensor’s field of vision, your headlights revert to high beams.
